Draped No. 1

Draped No.1 is the most complex—and most personal—vase I've created. Formed through a blend of digital precision and hand-sculpted intuition, it represents a significant evolution in my design process. Due to its size, only a single mold could be made, and that mold yielded 20 pieces selected for this edition before becoming unusable. This is a closed, limited edition with no restocks planned. There will only be 20, ever.

The form was designed to celebrate one of my favorite flowers: the peony. I grow nearly 100 varieties in my garden, including rare and ancient tree peonies. Their large, dramatic blooms inspired this shape. The tall profile and fanned folds support heavy blossoms while giving them space to open, move, and show off.

But like all good design, it revealed other possibilities. Large-faced dahlias look stunning in it, masses of summer hydrangeas fill it beautifully, and I've even used it with mums and greens for Christmas arrangements. I create a vase with a specific flower or shape in mind, then discover how else they can be used.

A subtle dip along the lower right rim was intentionally shaped to cradle shorter, irregular stems—especially those of tree peonies, whose fleeting, oversized blooms are normally cut short. But we all have a flower we break or spot in the garden that needs to be cut but can't quite reach the heights of its friends. My vases have superpowers, and this one knows that a good arrangement doesn't have to be filled with uniformly tall stems.

Each piece is handmade in the USA using slip-cast porcelain, crafted from natural earth minerals and touched by more than 7 craftspeople in the process. Each piece develops its own character during the firing process—the high kiln temperatures cause subtle warping, creating unique variations in form. The glaze sheen shifts from piece to piece, and each develops its own pattern of freckles and surface details. I've personally inspected each piece three times, embracing these natural variations as what makes each vase irreplaceable, before signing it and giving it its number out of 20.
